Discovery Call

During your initial conversation with us, we’ll explore your pelvic health concerns—whether it’s pain, incontinence, prolapse symptoms, or postpartum recovery—and how these issues are affecting your daily life. We’ll listen to your goals and discuss your needs in detail. Our priority is to determine the root cause of your symptoms and ensure we’re the right fit to support your healing journey before moving forward with your evaluation.

Initial Evaluation

Your first in-person session will include a comprehensive review of your pelvic health history, lifestyle, and goals. We’ll assess your posture, core stability, breathing patterns, and pelvic floor muscle function through external and, when appropriate, internal examination. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of the contributing factors to your symptoms and a roadmap for your care.

Personalized Plan of Care

Based on your evaluation, we’ll develop a custom plan that may include:

● Pelvic floor muscle retraining (for strengthening or relaxation)
● Manual therapy for soft tissue release or scar mobilization
● Core and hip stabilization exercises
● Breathwork and posture training
● Education on bladder/bowel habits and lifestyle modifications

We’ll also provide app-based home programming so you can stay consistent and supported between sessions.

Re-Evaluation

We’ll regularly check your progress and ensure your treatment is aligned with your evolving goals. Around your tenth visit, we’ll conduct a detailed re-assessment, including retesting muscle strength, mobility, and functional improvements. Based on your results, we’ll refine your care plan or begin preparing for maintenance.

Custom Maintenance Program

Once you’ve reached your pelvic health goals, we’ll guide you into a maintenance program tailored to support long-term success. Whether you want to stay symptom-free, return to sport, or navigate new life stages (like menopause or future pregnancies), we’ll remain a trusted resource through ongoing exercise plans and wellness support.

What Our Patients Say

I LOVE Direct Orthopedic Therapy!!! I have been to most of the Physical Therapy firms in this area, and DOT is by far the best in every way! The therapists, mine are Dr. Cage and Dr. Bailey, are extremely knowledgeable, and innovative, and helpful. The thing that DOT does that other PT clinics don’t do is be with the patient the entire session. They do exams, therapy, and exercises themselves with the patient. They do not pass the patient off to an assistant. I appreciate this so much! I will definitely recommend Direct Orthopedic Therapy to everyone I know!!!

Tammy Smith

As i’ve aged, my balance declined and i feared I would fall. Dr. Cage suggested that the balance problem may be the result of my comprnsating for hip pain that slowly arose after foot surgery 5 years ago altered my gait. He prescribed exercises that focused not only on balance, but also on strengthening the hip joints. Within a month the hip pain disappeared almost entirely! I am walking with a spring in my step and with complete confidence. Thank you Dr. Cage!

Leyse Lowry

I was referred to Dr. Jonson by a good friend that’s also personal trainer. The staff was very friendly as soon as I walked in. Everyone had a great energy. Dr. Jonson was very knowledgable and was able to give me the clarity I was looking for. He was able to narrow down the most likely cause for my shoulder issue and was able to answers all the questions I had. He even sent me off with exercises I can continue at home for some extra rehab. Great experience and fortunate to be referred to such a great place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized branch of physical therapy that focuses on treating dysfunctions of the pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. Therapy may involve exercises, manual techniques, posture and breathing work, and lifestyle education to improve function, reduce pain, and restore quality of life.

Who can benefit from pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy can help:

● Women during pregnancy and postpartum recovery
● Individuals experiencing urinary or fecal incontinence
● Those with pelvic pain, prolapse, or sexual dysfunction
● Men with chronic prostatitis or post-prostatectomy issues
● Anyone dealing with constipation, tailbone pain, or core instability

What conditions does pelvic floor therapy treat?

Common conditions include:

● Urinary/fecal incontinence
● Pelvic organ prolapse
● Chronic pelvic pain
● Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
● Vaginismus
● Diastasis recti
● Constipation
● Post-surgical recovery (e.g., hysterectomy, prostatectomy)

What happens during my first visit?

Your initial evaluation will include a comprehensive review of your pelvic health history, lifestyle, and current symptoms. Your therapist may assess posture, breathing, abdominal and pelvic floor muscle function. With your consent, an internal pelvic exam may be performed to evaluate muscle tone, strength, and coordination.

Do I need a referral to start pelvic floor therapy?

In many states, including Florida, you can begin physical therapy without a referral. However, your insurance plan may require one for coverage. Our team is happy to check your benefits.

Is the internal pelvic exam required?

No. While internal exams can provide valuable information about your pelvic floor muscles, they are never required. Your therapist will always explain the purpose, request your consent, and respect your comfort level.

Is pelvic floor physical therapy painful?

Treatment should never feel invasive or traumatic. Some discomfort may occur with certain techniques, especially in cases of muscle tightness or trigger points, but therapists prioritize your comfort and will adjust as needed.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, severity, and goals. Some people feel relief within a few visits, while others may benefit from ongoing care over several months. Progress is regularly assessed and treatment plans are adjusted accordingly.

What should I wear to my appointments?

Wear comfortable, flexible clothing that allows movement. If an internal exam is part of your session, your therapist will provide privacy and proper draping.

Can pelvic floor therapy help with sexual function?

Yes. Pelvic floor therapy can significantly improve sexual health by addressing pain during intercourse, muscle tension, decreased sensation, and issues related to arousal or function. Your therapist will tailor care to your needs and goals.
